39th Annual COSPAR Scientific Assembly in Myosore, India, 14-22 July 2012.Dear colleagues
We would like to draw your attention to the following session, scheduled in the EPSC 2009 "European Planetary Science Congress 2009" Potsdam, September 13 - 18,
http://meetings.copernicus.org/epsc2009/index.html:
   Session: MT8 Management and exploitation of planetary data through planetary VO tools and services
   Convener: Maria Teresa Capria (INAF, Italy)
   Co-conveners: G. Chanteur, W.Schmidt, W. Thuillot
This session is devoted to the presentation and discussion of services being offered to scientific community in order to manage and exploit the huge amount of data coming from space mission.
An update will be given on the status of VO services devoted to the planetary data.
In situ and remote observations onboard planetary probes as well as Earth based observations in various spectral ranges offer a great wealth of information related to the objects of the Solar System and to exoplanets.
Preserving this dearly acquired legacy is a prerequisite to its scientific exploitation. For space missions this is usually achieved by space agencies through archiving initiatives like the NASA Planetary Data System (PDS) or the ESA Planetary Science Archives (PSA).
The curation of ground based observations is done by astronomical observatories which manage their own data repositories, sometimes since a long time. A comprehensive and coordinated effort to broaden and make easier the public access to all these data is mandatory to enhance their use by the whole community of planetary scientists.
A Virtual Observatory can provide users with an easy access to data archives and analysis or simulation tools: various information services can efficiently supplement a VO. The VO approach becomes widespread in astronomy, but still needs to be promoted in planetary sciences.
This VO session will be the opportunity to update our knowledge of the VO activities in planetary laboratories and to estimate the effort necessary to develop in order to achieve a Planetary Virtual Observatory.
The first bricks of the VO, to be developed in compliance with recommendations issued by the International Planetary Data Alliance (IPDA) and the International Virtual Observatory Alliance (IVOA) are data models in planetary sciences and data access protocols that will allow planetary teams to share their data:
thus we call for communications on these key topics. But this session will also be open to wider topics in the VO context, being the proposed session also focused on data management from the point of view of scientists.
Main topics of this session will be:
o VO tools and facilities, web services, workflows;
o planetary science applications in the VO context;
o Data archiving, data finding and access, including virtual observatory tools and techniques;
o Data exploitation, that means services and tools of general interest such as particular databases, mapping software and so on.

Dear Colleagues!
The EGU General Assembly 2009 is coming closer and 13th of January is the deadline for submission of abstracts. I would like to invite you to contribute to AS3.18 Validation of Stratospheric Dynamics and Chemistry Models.
We invite contributions assessing dynamical and chemical models of the stratosphere (e.g. CTMs and CCMs).
Existing and new observational platforms and instruments are challenging modellers to confront numerical simulations more quantitatively with the "real world".
Questions arising are:
o Which observations are most useful?
o Which derived diagnostics are required? What statistical tools are most appropriate?
o Which metrics allow quantitative comparisons between models and observations?
o Is it possible to combine different measures or metrics?
This session tries to encourage a broad cross-section of presentations relating to the above-mentioned theme(examples of observations, diagnostics, methods, techniques and metrics), fostering knowledge transfer and informed discussion.
Please submit at: http://meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU2009/session/285.
We hope seeing many of you at EGU next year!
Thank you and best wishes,
Peter Braesicke and Ulrike Langematz
Dear colleagues,
it’s time to decide the dates for the next IPDA Steering Committee meeting. The Italian Space Agency is offering (without asking money!) a nice room in its building, at the center of Rome, from June 30 to July 3.
These dates seem to be convenient for most of you. I strongly suggest to held the meeting on July 2-3, leaving June 1 and July 2 for possible splinters. Let me know as quickly as possible if you have different opinions.
Regards,
Maria Teresa Capria
Dear Europlanet website contributor,
Thanks to the work of Florian Topf (Gratz, N7 plasma node), a great improvement has been released on the Europlanet Resources Search interface.
There is now a "keyword assistance" while you type in some keywords to search for, that will give you a list of all the keywords allowed (you can also filter your search by node).
Please try it here : http://europlanet.cesr.fr/n7/res (click on "SEARCH").
All new additions to the website are available here as usual : http://europlanet.cesr.fr/history
Please note that a *new version* (V6) of the provisional agenda for the Europa-Jupiter International Science Workshop (ESRIN, Frascati, 21-22 April 2008) is now available on the website.
The registration to this workshop is now closed: *No oral contributions* can now be accepted, but we still have space for posters (vertical orientation, A0 size max). Therefore, you are encouraged to send us contributions, *for posters only*, as soon as you can.
